Put on my father’s coat
Turned on the Christmas lights
and I shoveled out the driveway,
there was not a car in sight
And I did it all with the radio on,
that’s where our difference lies
He likes the quiet of his thoughts
and I like
The noise, the fuzz, the voices of
the strangers we could know
The proof of living life out there
not covered up in snow
like this snow white town
As far as we can tell
it has always been this way
When our relatives were kids
that’s what their relatives would say
‘Cus they were a traveling band
and where this birch tree stands
they held a ceremony every year,
and otherwise they left us alone
And all the books in libraries
are sticking to their stories
but every time I read the name
on the sign, I wonder otherwise
The noise, the fuzz, the voices of
the strangers we could know
The proof of living life out there
not covered up in snow
like this snow white town
There was this one story
about a farmer’s field
When picking rocks to sow the seeds
for another hopeful yield
They came across an arrowhead
and a brown-faced baby doll
Sent it in a shoe-box to the town museum
I’ve seen it so I know
I worked there for two summer in a row
and I read the documents
they kept inside the cabinets
And the books are missing pages,
they’re unraveling their threads
The men who meet in secret chambers
are nearing their end
The noise, the fuzz, the voices of
the strangers we could know
The proof of living life out there
not covered up in snow
like this snow white town

My heart melts for 'Back to the Woods', and I would have ended up buying the CD even if it was just that song on it's own. Throughout the whole album, the melodies are incredibly smooth and textured, while the background instruments intimately fuse with the autoharp in the best possible way. Alex Marshall
