All of My Lakes Lay Frozen Over
by Corwin Fox
All of my lakes lay frozen over
All of my nightmares capsized
Sitting here watching you in silence
The crackle of the violin
Playing for the first time
Staring at the fireplace singing:
All of my lakes lay frozen over
All of my nightmares capsized
Sitting here watching you in silence
Imagine at the heart of things
All the sound you never said
Waiting to be born again singing:
All of my lakes lay frozen over
All of my nightmares capsized
Sitting here watching you in silence

Views from Potsdam
by Miss Emily Brown
Afraid if I fall asleep in the middle of this party
I might find myself in danger
If I open my mouth in the middle of this party
I might find myself a stranger
In the city I was born in I know all the pretty places
I return to see the town hall where it always stood
In the city I was born in I know all the local faces
but I return to learn that my home is no longer here
I thought I would fall in love by the River Havel
99 balloons behind my eyes
I thought I would walk my dog along the River Havel
through the park of no concern under summer skies
When we lived in Montreal we had the time of our lives
I immigrated there when my friends from Brussels did
In the city I was born in I know all the local faces
yet I return to learn that my home is no longer here

Flash Freeze

Flash Freeze
by Miss Emily Brown
I don't care about the bugs,
I only want to sit outside the house with you.
And don't care our home's begun to lean,
I only want to hear your laughter.
I know that it's coming down hard
but I'm not going to shut the windows down.
There's a bottle here to finish up
so mix your words up in a cup and drink to me.
Flash freeze on your hands
the Peters child sick in bed
and a wolf inside, a wolf inside
a wolf inside your sleeping head.
Flash freeze on your hands
the tallest fiddler in the band
he held your eye and he held your hand
drop your fire and smother it dead,
drop your fire.
I don't care to be your wife,
in fact I don't think you know what you're offering.
All the brides lined up to get a
seat inside the cage they throw the lions in.
Catch me when I'm weak, when I am sick
In winter, or too much smoking the fantasy.
Take all that ambition that you feel
and go fix something that needs fixing.
Flash freeze on your mind
a lightning bolt came right inside
My queen was closing the windows down
in her nightgown, a sudden storm
Flash freeze on the telephone
a haywagon came rushing home
A boy was standing on the back
with a pitchfork in his hand
drop your fire.
Dynamite in the cofferdam
less like a lion and more like a lamb.
It was first july 1958,
over she came with her poker face.
Cut the ribbon on a brand new town,
on a brand new life, a brand new sound
As coins trickle into a time machine,
dive in the river where the old road leads.
Flash freeze on your hands
rapids rushing through the canal
so loud that you could hardly hear
but now they're gone you can't think clear.
Flash freeze on your hands
water gallopped over the land
Your childhood under water now
fifty years depression found you.
Flash freeze on your mind
a lighting fork came right inside
My queen was closing the windows down
in her nightgown, a sudden storm
Flash freeze on the telephone
a haywagon came rushing home
A boy was standing on the back
with a pitchfork in his hand
Drop your fire.

Falcon

Falcon
by Miss Emily Brown
Someday I will be a falcon,
not just any other bird.
I won’t be afraid of money,
I’ll always have a room and board.
Pick a card from the stack,
Woman of the Pentagons
with a Falcon on her shoulder,
a bunch of grapes in her palm.
Man around the campfire cries
We’re not dying when we go!
He was a priest, now a vendor
selling tickets at the show.
Smoke went straight up past Orion
Songs of wolves drowned out by cellos
Someday I will be a falcon,
not just any other bird.
I won’t be afraid of love or
any other ardent word.
Pick a card from the stack,
Scorpion comes your way
riding in on horseback
with an offer to make.
Michael takes someone’s hand,
disappears in the dark
and the children fall asleep
to the rhythm of the stars.
Smoke went straight up past Orion
Songs of wolves drowned out by cellos
Smoke went straight up past Orion
Violins and sweet packed pipes
Someday I will be a falcon,
not just any other bird.
I won’t be afraid of falling
in or out of any world.

Relative Chemistry
by Corwin Fox
Michael built the boat and sailed away from here
Set the course in darkness, watched the shoreline disappear
He saw the mountain tooth pierce an empty sky
And as the blood drained down his driftbone shelter kept him dry
“there must be some kind of way out of here”
said the blood to the heart
the mind is prickly; unholy trickery
the way things fall apart
I should have rode the rails when the sun went down
Found a ghost and settled in some long-deserted town
Michael checks the sky, blue upon the sails
Holds a life-preserver when the better weather fails
“there must be some kind of way out of here”
said the blood to the heart
the mind is prickly; unholy trickery
the way things fall apart
relative chemistries

Self Surgery
by Corwin Fox
one strong beat
the heart is a depth charge for blowing up cages
two long feet
pillars of pupils that tear through the pages
boiling over
memory only dismembers me
self surgery renders me new
golden days
the brain has a process for telling good stories
old bent ways
disciplined praises that celebrate glories
tidal waving
memory only dismembers me
self surgery renders me new

Old Perfume
by Miss Emily Brown
All wait on this decision,
this submission
don’t decorate it.
She’s my wildest caper
I cannot escape her
though she cannot see her hand before her face her
eyes are sick with shining
sick with shining, holy moons
and the future is a black, a black black night.
The coat is hard to wear
soaked in nostalgia -
just an old perfume.
Don’t decorate it.
She’s my wildest caper
I cannot escape her
though she cannot see her hand before her face her
eyes are sick with shining
sick with shining, holy moons
and the future is a black, a black black night.

Snow White Town

Snow White Town
written by Miss Emily Brown
Put on my father’s coat
Turned on the Christmas lights
and I shoveled out the driveway,
there was not a car in sight
And I did it all with the radio on,
that’s where our difference lies
He likes the quiet of his thoughts
and I like
The noise, the fuzz, the voices of
the strangers we could know
The proof of living life out there
not covered up in snow
like this snow white town
As far as we can tell
it has always been this way
When our relatives were kids
that’s what their relatives would say
‘Cus they were a traveling band
and where this birch tree stands
they held a ceremony every year,
and otherwise they left us alone
And all the books in libraries
are sticking to their stories
but every time I read the name
on the sign, I wonder otherwise
The noise, the fuzz, the voices of
the strangers we could know
The proof of living life out there
not covered up in snow
like this snow white town
There was this one story
about a farmer’s field
When picking rocks to sow the seeds
for another hopeful yield
They came across an arrowhead
and a brown-faced baby doll
Sent it in a shoe-box to the town museum
I’ve seen it so I know
I worked there for two summer in a row
and I read the documents
they kept inside the cabinets
And the books are missing pages,
they’re unraveling their threads
The men who meet in secret chambers
are nearing their end
The noise, the fuzz, the voices of
the strangers we could know
The proof of living life out there
not covered up in snow
like this snow white town

When You Come Down

When You Come Down
by Miss Emily Brown
That old can’t get me down reputation
is starting to show its cracks around here.
But in my house there is no room for your thick skin faking.
Around this room count for me a thin smile.
When you come down
When you come down
You know I’m gonna turn your taps on -
Always we could laugh or we could cry.
I know that you have been affected -
too many years in the core
and you’ve seen some things
would put a hole in me.
There’s places I can never go with you.
But in my house there is no room for your thick skin.
Around this room, count for me a thin smile.
When you come down
When you come down
You know I’m gonna turn your taps on.
Always, always, always we could laugh or we could --
You work and work and work
and you give ‘til you’ve got none.
When you come down
When you come down
When you come down.

I'm Gone
by Corwin Fox
up from the northwoods i heard you call
set out to meet you one perfect fall
the city tilted and shook us west
me and my brothers, at your request
don't mind me, i'm gone
through my treeline on and on
don't mind me, i'm gone
down by the river come swirling fast
"will you come with me?" i heard you ask
i sat and waited all holy day
i know you saw me but wouldn't stay
don't mind me, i'm gone
take my sweet time on and on
don't mind me, i'm gone
through my treeline on and on
don't mind me, i'm gone
i hear your footsteps, i know your looks
i play your records, i read your books
and when i meet you quicksilver moon
sit down beside me and sing a tune
don't mind me, i'm gone
make my beeline on and on
don't mind me, i'm gone
take my sweet time on and on
don't mind me, i'm gone
through my treeline on and on
don't mind me, i'm gone
take my sweet time on and on
don't mind me, i'm gone

Hunter’s Moon
by Miss Emily Brown
I’ve got an old jealous mother in law
Every woman she meets is a shadow eclipsing her son
I don’t care as long as she is good to our little one
But it’s a hunter’s moon after the harvest is done,
a hunter’s moon and I am the hunted one.
I know the road and I’d leave if I could go
but the rent is paid, the tank is filled with oil.
I’d rather live my days in fantasy, turning pages
than give in to the bitter queen with the poison apple.
I heard about a woman like her, could prick your finger
I heard about a woman like her, deadly splinter
I heard about a woman like her, could lock you in a tower
And it’s a hunter’s moon after the harvest is done
a hunter’s moon and I got it comin.
I’ve got an old jealous mother in law.
If I can love her I can overcome her.

The Bleeding Place

The Bleeding Place
by Corwin Fox
Cars careen down winding roads
Hydroplane on waters slicks
Ancient trees in deadly rows
Bury bones in bark and sticks
Oh, my thoughts taste like a thirst no water could erase
Only years and years of tidal waves would have worked to cleanse this bleeding place
Home alone at night again
Loneliness, true love’s a friend
Wedding ink corrodes the pen
Skin the tattoo holds within
Oh, my thoughts taste like a thirst no water could erase
Only years and years of tidal waves would have worked to cleanse this bleeding place
Work the night and sleep the day
Eyes and taillights black and red
Violence’s soliloquy
Snakes that violate the bed
Oh, my thoughts taste like a thirst no water could erase
Only years and years of tidal waves would have worked to cleanse this bleeding place
Caught between the sweaty sheets
Burning like a prairie sun
Guilty flesh and pleasure meet
Steel exploding from a gun
Rooted here a thousand years
trunk to trunk we seek the sky
Watered by our prior tears
seeds of fruit were born to die
